Position Description

HIRING INCENTIVES
  • $2,000 incremental hiring incentive,
  • 3% or 6% education differential for a AA or BA/BS or higher degree,
  • 3 nights lodging and meals for out of area applicants in our conditional job offer phase of our hiring process.


    This class is responsible for being trained on the job in order to become licensed Deputy Sheriffs. Incumbents must also obtain state certificate from jailer’s school within six months and successfully complete field training through the County and enter the academy within one year.This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.

 Essential Duties:
(These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Learns department policies and procedures and how to perform general law enforcement duties to include: responding to calls, assisting with the apprehension of suspects or inmates, conducting searches for contraband, ensuring the proper handling of evidence, testifying in court, and serving civil processes and court orders.
  • Processes paperwork for the admittance or release of inmates or detainees, searches individuals and inventories, confiscates, or distributes property, and maintains an accurate headcount of the facility.
  • Assists in resolving disputes between inmates, completes applicable forms and documents, and enforces violations with write-ups.
  • Assists other agencies in transferring inmates to other facilities and ensures proper documentation and recording is completed.
  • Provides orientation to new inmates or detainees.
  • Escorts inmates or detainees in or outside of the facility for special programs, medical appointments, and court appearances.
  • Provides initial information inmates, which includes visitation sign-ups, medical information, court dates, and bail and bond information.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

 Education/Experience, Licenses, Knowledge and Skills, Physical Requirements:
Training and Experience (positions in this class require):
  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D.;
  • or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.


Licensing Requirements (positions in this class typically require):
  • Valid Driver’s License from state of residency;
  • Must 19 years of age.
  • Must be a US Citizen


MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A COMPREHENSIVE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION PROCESS INCLUDING: CRIMINAL, CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, DRIVING, CREDIT AND EMPLOYMENT HISTORY CHECKS.

Knowledge of:
  • Ability to learn department operations and procedures;
  • Ability to learn applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Safe driving principles and practices.


Skill in:
  • Maintaining a safe working environment;
  • Operating a vehicle;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.


Physical Requirements:
  • Positions in this class require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, manaual dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing.
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, and intense noises.
